Chapter Eleven

Elijah

“What the hell were you thinking?”

I turned to see East walk towards me—no that wasn’t right. He stalked towards me, anger radiating off him with each step.

“What?” I spat, my chest heaving.

Everything was tight inside me and I couldn’t catch my breath.

I didn’t know what was wrong with me. Why I couldn’t focus. But damn it.

Every time that I thought about what could’ve happened, what had happened, I couldn’t breathe.

I rubbed the spot over my chest where it hurt, and realized it was my fucking heart.

I cursed under my breath and began to pace.

“What is wrong with you? Why are you acting like this?”

I looked over at East as my brother narrowed his gaze at me, then reached out and gripped my shoulder. I moved back, not wanting to be touched, but East moved closer again.

Without thinking, I punched him, my fist connecting with East’s jaw.

East cursed, his hand going to where I’d hit.

“Seriously?”

I shook out my hand, looked at my already swelling knuckles. “Why is your jaw like granite?”

“Why do you hit like a pussy?”

“You know Eliza would say that pussies take the beating, and we shouldn’t be so misogynistic.”

East flipped me off. “I don’t really want to hear what our sister has to say on that subject. There are lines and I’m not going to cross it. Now, if your hand hurts, it’s because you didn’t punch correctly. Don’t know what your fucking problem is, but Dad taught you better than that. Hell, we taught you better. Your wrist was flopping around like a dying fish.”

I held back a growl. “That couldn’t be further from the truth.”

“I don’t know.”

I looked down at my hand again, then up at my brother. “I fucking hit you.”

“Yes, you did. Idiot. What the hell is wrong with you? Why would you hit me?”

“I’m so damn sorry. That was uncalled for.” I shook out my hand again, then rolled my shoulders back.

“You’re welcome to hit me back. It’s only right.”

East looked down at his hand, then at my jaw. He narrowed his gaze and I braced myself.

When he sighed and shook his head, I relaxed. “I’ll get you later. Probably when I’m the one acting like an idiot.”

I tensed again. “Why are you calling me an idiot?”

“You yelled at your girlfriend. Because she tripped. What the fuck is wrong with you?”

And like that, I deflated. My brother was right. I was a damn idiot and deserved whatever came at me.

I moved away, rubbing my hands over my face. “I barely even remember yelling.” I paused, my body growing cold as dread and guilt slid over me. “Did I hurt her? Did I touch her?”

East stepped towards me. “Don’t you remember?”

I whirled on him, my mouth going dry as I nearly vomited thinking about the what-ifs. “Did. I. Hurt. Her?”

“Her feelings. But no, you didn’t touch her. You wouldn’t hurt her, Elijah. You overreacted, and we both damn well know why. But no, you didn’t physically hurt her. But you left her standing there.
